Hot Hot PinkLast weekend, before school started, we went to get Bri’s hair done. Per our agreement, when she wants to do things to herself outside the norm such as piercings or hair color, she has to wait thirty days after receiving my approval, to actually do it. There are certain things that are forbidden, and she knows to not even ask. No tattoos, no belly button piercing, no tongue or lip piercings, and any private areas are definitely not allowed. It’s not that I’m opposed to these things for adults, but I am concerned about the infection risks. The request this summer? She wanted to streak her hair pink. I gave permission in June, but she wanted to wait until school started. That was a mistake.

The first color that we picked was Cotton Candy Pink by Manic Panic. The first day of school, it looked OK, but by day three it had washed out and she simply had blonde streaks with a couple of hints of pink. Frustrated that it didn’t even last a week, we went out and bought the Amplified version of Cotton Candy Pink, which was supposed to last 30% longer. This weekend, we returned to the salon to have it applied, and by the time they got to washing it out, the results were already fading. Needless to say, she was upset and I was highly annoyed at the cost incurred to date.

On the way home, we ran by the beauty supply, and I convinced her to try a deeper color. We went with Hot Hot Pink. I grabbed a color bowl, a brush, a cape, and some shower caps and we headed home. This is the one time that living in Las Vegas in the summer came in handy. I applied the color all over her hair, put the cap on her, and sent her outside in the sun for half an hour. We did not have one of the big dryers like the salon for her to sit under, so improvisation was necessary. When 30 minutes had passed, we came inside and I rinsed her with cold water in the kitchen sink. EVERYTHING was fuschia afterward. We were scrubbing the granite and the sinks for another half hour, but the results were well worth it. This time, the color did take, and all of it was a deep shade of magenta, even the brown parts. We’re pretty sure that the brown part will fade quickly, but the part that was blonde, looked awesome. She was very pleased, and can’t wait for school on Tuesday.

She, of course, had to preview it today at her cello lesson and at the mall with some friends. They all liked it, and I scored “coolest mom” points not only for letting her do it, but got the high score for being the one to apply it. The pic above is not Bri, but a sample of the color. I tried to take a picture yesterday, but it just didn’t pick up well enough in the photo.

Her orchestra director is so going to freak. I’m waiting for that call.
